Losing a passport at the last minute is one of the most common reasons for needing expedited passport service. Passports are small and easily misplaced, and they have the tendency to disappear just when you need them most.
That’s what happened to novelist Jennifer Belle and her husband. After saying their “I dos,” the couple was ready to jump in a plane and head to Italy for the honeymoon – until they realized that his passport was missing.
Since the plane tickets and the hotel rooms were already booked, and since Ms. Belle still had her passport, the couple decided that she should go alone so that the money wouldn’t go to waste. Meanwhile, the hapless groom would work on replacing his lost passport and then join her in Italy as soon as possible.
Fortunately, this story has a happy ending, at least for Ms. Belle: her husband’s temporary absence really did make the heart grow fonder. She writes:
Honeymooning alone, I discovered what it was to be married. I experienced it more fully, had a chance to get used to it. Without him there to interfere, I could be my most romantic. We were star-crossed; he was struggling to get to me. Every bride should be alone after the stress of a wedding. I felt sorry for anyone with a groom to deal with.
Somehow, I doubt her husband was quite as sanguine about the whole affair, if only because while she was enjoying Venice, he was dealing with the hassle of trying to get his lost passport replaced as quickly as possible.
To replace a passport that’s gone missing, you’ll need:
- Proof of identity (like a driver’s license)
- A photocopy of your ID
- Proof of citizenship (usually your birth or naturalization certificate)
- 2 passport photos
- Passport application form DS-11
- Lost passport form DS-64
- $135 for passport fees, plus an additional $60 to have it expedited.
